Jamnagar (Nawanagar) is a city and a municipal corporation, situated in Jamnagar district, In the Indian state of Gujarat. Jamnagar is the sixth biggest city in the Indian state of Gujarat after Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar.

Jamnagar was established by in 1540 A.D. as the capital of the Royal State of Nawanagar (Jamnagar). The Jamnagar was founded by Jam Rawa. Jamnagar, historically recognized as Nawanagar (the new town), was one of the most famous royal states of the Jadeja's in the region of Saurashtra.

The Jamnagar was situated on the banks of rivers “Nagmatti” and “Rangmatti” by Shri Jam Raval. The family of Jam Halla, who is one of the beneficiaries of Lord Krishna, the creator of “Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta”.

Jamnagar, historically called Nawanagar, was one of the major royal states of Saurashtra. The Jamnagar district originally developed as Halar district is not only recent in its origin but also in its modernized set-up.

Jamnagar Was was made up mainly by Maharaja Kumar Shri Ranjitsinhji in the 1920s when it was known as Nawanagar. The city lies now to the south of the Gulf of Kutch and is 337 km west of the state capital Gujarat, Gandhinagar.

Culture of Jamnagar

Most peoples of Jamnagar are Gujarati and speaks Kathiawadi language. Few percentage peoples are speaking Kutchi language which is written in the Gujarati writing but is not commonly understandable with Gujarati. Kathiawadi language is generally used for day to day communication.

Major communities include Dawoodi Bohras Satvara, Ahirs, Patels, Bhanushalis, Rajputs (Darbars), Mers, Jains, Lohanas etc. Marine National Park, the just marine sanctuary of India is near Jamnagar, which are situated on the coral reef island of Pirotan.

Jamnagar is well-famous for its four Marble Jain temples. First is Vardhman Shah's Temple, Raisi Shah's Temple, Sheth's Temple, and Vasupujya Swami's Temple.

All were made within 1574 and 1622. Bala Hanuman temple in Jamnagar is also very popular and is recorded in the Guinness book of world records for the continuous singing of "Ram Dhun" since 1 August 1964.
