Hisar was established in 1354 AD, as 'Hisar-e-Firoza' by Firoz Shah Tughlaq, who ruled over the Sultanate of Delhi. Hisar was founded in 1356 by Fīrūz Shah Tughluq and later became an important Mughal center. Depopulated in the 18th century. It was occupied later in the century by the British brave George Thomas.

Hisar has established a district in 1867. The city is surrounded by a surface with four gates and holds the remains of Fīrūz Shah’s fort and palace and several antique mosques, including the Jahaj, now a Jaina temple.

Hisar is a divisional headquarters of the Hisar Divisional Commissioner and also the headquarters of Police Range. Here situated a battalion headquarters of B.S.F. 3rd H.A.P. and also commando force.

In order to ratify all of these departments, a five-story District Administrative Complex was made, with the offices assigned in 1980. It joins the new Judiciary Complex, which is also made functional. This administrative and judiciary complex is the biggest in Haryana. As a district headquarters, it may be one of the biggest in India.

The 2011 census the Hisar district had a population of 1,742,815. This gave it a ranking of 276th in India out of a whole of 640 districts. The district has a population frequency of 438 residents per square kilometer (1,130/sq mi). Its population increase rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 13.38%.

The Hisar district has seven Vidhan Sabha constituencies, viz, Adampur, Uklana, Narnaund, Hansi, Barwala, Hisar and Nalwa. Every of these is part of Hisar Lok Sabha constituency.

Geography of Hisar

Hisar is situated at 29.09°N 75.43°E in western Haryana. It has an average altitude of 215 m (705 ft) above expect sea level. The region is the bit of the alluvial Ghaggar-Yamuna field and its southern and western parts mark a continuous transition to the desert.

Some time ago Ghaggar and Drishadvati Rivers flowed in the city.
