Gandhinagar is the capital city of the state of Gujarat. Gandhinagar is one of only three planned cities in India. Gandhinagar situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River, serving as the legislative center of Gandhinagar District. The city is called for the father of the country, Mohandas K. Gandhi (Mahatma Gandhi), who was born in Gujarat.

Gandhinagar was designed by Chief Architect H.K. Mewada, educated at Cornell University, and his subsidiary Prakash M Apte.

Gandhinagar is 23 km away from the city of Ahmedabad and 464 km from Mumbai. In 1960, the Bombay state of India was divided into two states - Maharashtra and Gujarat. Bombay (now Known as Mumbai) became the capital of Maharashtra. For Gujarat, the new capital was wanted. Gandhinagar was then built the capital of Gujarat. The city is divided into 30 sectors.

The popular Akshardham temple is placed in this city. Akshardham temple was attacked by two people in the year 2002.

There are four Talukas under the capital namely: Maansa, Kalol, Dehgaam, and Gandhinagar.

Capital contains all departments’ head offices, secretariats of all departments, ministers’ offices, ministers’ residences, government house, residence of Governor, office of Governor, all major offices and building. Geography and Climate of Gandhinagar

The average height of Gandhinagar is 81 meters and the city is located on the banks of River Sabarmati. The city situated in the north-central-east direction of Gujarat and is covered over an area of 205 square kilometers.

Sabarmati river dries up during the summer months and only a very little and narrow stream of water is found in place of the river. Gandhinagar is also named the tree capital of India because of 54% green cover island area in the Gandhinagar.
