Aurangabad was founded in 1610 by Malik Ambar. The city was called "Kharki" at that time. After the Malik Ambar, his son Fateh Khan changed the name of Fatehnagar. It was only when Aurangzeb became the viceroy of the Deccan, he changed the name to Aurangabad.
